Artificial intelligence has started making a difference in the world of design. Site builders such as Wix and GoDaddy have started exploring the possibilities with artificial intelligence to upgrade their platform. With the use of A.I., designers are beginning to accomplish more with less labor by using tools created with A.I. to help streamline the workload.

Artificial intelligence is allowing designers and developers to assist with some of the decision making, such as creating a layout that is common within the industry. Artificial intelligence will also make suggestion such as color and fonts that would compliment each other.

Also, with programs such as Adobe Sensei, design tools are being updated with tools powered by A.I. Artificial intelligence has done an outstanding job understanding what designers want out of design software such as Photoshop.

As artificial intelligence continues to grow within the design industry, it is important to note artificial intelligence does have a disadvantage. A.I. can do a great job mix and matching layouts, but there are certain things that robots will continue to struggle with.

What are the Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence in Design?

The are a few reasons why artificial intelligence is not going to be flawless. All the reasons leads up to one thing: Robots are not humans. Without a human-touch in web design, it is hard to really capture what our users want in a website.

A.I. Bots are not User Oriented

Artificial intelligence in web design has continued to help designers in a variety of ways. The one thing that can make a web designer successful is having the ability to empathize with the users. Artificial intelligence has been built solely to serve designers and developers. There are lots of people who browse the web and all of these users are different in each and every way.

Older users interact with websites much differently than younger users. The way people interact with the web also vary across different industries. It would be really hard to create an A.I. bot who could identify what users want when there are loads of users who all behave differently. Human designers have the ability to selectively find users within the industry and learn about their unique behaviors albeit with the help of A.I. bots.

Lack of Hospitality

Because it is incredibly difficult to find out what a human user wants in a website, it is difficult for A.I. to deliver based on any friction points that are available on a web page. Artificial intelligence is built on machine learning which means that it makes decisions based on analytics. When a user is interacting with a website, it is very common for them to make decisions based on how they feel. If a customer is frustrated because a remove item cannot be found on a shopping cart page, it is easy to drop out of the purchase altogether.

Empathy cannot be programmed into A.I., so trying to capture one of the most important factors of decision making is not ideal for artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence can be a huge time and money saver for a company. However, websites go through numerous updates and things can change. This will require lots of man power to update and troubleshoot an A.I. bot. A.I. can handle and predict outcomes of the more simple things, so any issues that a bot could potentially have may or may not be worth maintaining.

Lack of Creativity and Innovation

Because a bots ability to perform based off of analytics, it is incredibly hard for artificial intelligence to think outside of the box. Again, A.I. cannot perform based off of human emotion, and part of capitalizing human emotions is being creative. The success of a company depends on how innovative and creative a company is.

Unlike humans, artificial intelligence cannot grow a knowledge of design skills as time goes by. They can only do whatever it is they are programmed to do. Ultimately, a programmer who can identify any of the design changes that are made over the years is the only thing that can allow a bot to grow knowledge-wise when it comes to design.

Artificial Intelligence Cannot Adapt

The behavior of users can change on a whim depending on what kind of design trends are common. Users are constantly interacting with the web differently. This is a disadvantage for artificial intelligence because A.I. thrive very well on making decisions based on prior results. A.I cannot predict design trends in the future nor can it help designers and developers make decisions at that capacity.

Bots that are created via artificial intelligence are incredibly useful. As time goes on, artificial intelligence will continue to become more powerful as it capitalizes on its many advantages. Where there are advantages, there are also disadvantages. It is important for designers and developers to acknowledge the disadvantages in order to best understand the capabilities of artificial intelligence and its power in design.
